Significant Internet Disruption Impacts Many Sites and Mobile Apps

A widespread web failure has impacted dozens websites and applications globally, as users noting problems getting online following issues at the web hosting platform.

The disrupted services include the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, along with several Amazon-managed operations including its primary shopping website and the Ring doorbell company.

Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was impacted as well as its subsidiaries Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were additional accounts of problems accessing the HMRC website on the start of the week. Furthermore across the UK, several Ring device owners turned to social media to complain their home gadgets were malfunctioning.

Just within Britain, reports of problems on individual apps reached the many thousands for each app.

Officials confirmed that the problem originated in the east coast of the US at AWS, a unit that offers vital online backbone for numerous businesses, who utilize resources on AWS infrastructure. AWS is the world’s largest online services platform.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a tool that reports on online failures, further indicated a rise in issues on Monday morning, and numerous instances found in Virginia, the site of the AWS US-East-1 zone where officials confirmed the issues started.
