Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

Mr Comey's lawyer filed the plea representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would attempt to have the case terminated for multiple factors including that his client, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

The former director was formally accused soon after Trump urged his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.

Court Developments

In court on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald informed the court they aimed to submit several legal requests to dismiss the case before a legal hearing, stating the prosecution was retaliatory and that a US attorney was wrongfully assigned to assume control of the proceedings.

Mr Comey's case was first overseen by Erik Siebert, who left his position under scrutiny from Trump after his examination into a different opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to file indictments.

Legal Setting

James Comey came across in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the legal venue on Wednesday, speaking with his legal team and making jokes. He was supported by his spouse, Mrs Failor and daughter Maureen Comey, a government attorney who the former government terminated.

Upon hearing to the court read his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in court on Wednesday, James Comey was asked if he grasped the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the judge.

Previous Events

James Comey was the head of the FBI from four years and was fired about a few months into the former president's initial presidency as president. At the moment, he was overseeing an examination into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between Russia and Trump's campaign.

Throughout his leadership, the director sparked a negative reaction from Democrats when he declared just days before the national vote that he was examining presidential nominee Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against Clinton were never brought, resulting in negative feedback from Republicans as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys claim Mr Comey provided false information to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he deceived the legislative body by saying he had not approved an individual at the FBI to leak to news outlets data about the government examinations.

Prosecutors also allege James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, obstruct and delay" the legislative group by making false statements to it.

Individual Responses

Via social media James Comey shared to his online platform after he was charged, he stated he was not guilty and charged Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".

"Our household have known for a long time that there are ramifications to standing up to Donald Trump," he stated. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I'm innocent," he added. "Thus initiate a trial."

The accusations against Mr Comey surfaced after Trump posted on social media insisting on his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, take legal action against the former director and other people.
