Afghan Taliban and Pakistan Report Multiple Deaths in Fresh Cross-Border Fighting

Frontier Tensions Intensify
Islamabad Armed Forces and Taliban Authorities Blame Each Other of Initiating Attacks in the Afghan Border District of Spin Boldak

New fighting erupted along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border early on Wednesday, with both parties blaming the other of starting lethal confrontations.

Pakistan's military announced that its troops had eliminated "15-20 Taliban fighters" and wounded numerous others in the Spin Boldak border district.

A Afghan authorities spokesman said that twelve Afghan civilians had been fatally struck and more than 100 injured by artillery from Pakistan. He further stated that numerous military personnel had been killed. None of the alleged deaths could be verified by third parties.

Violence between the neighbors has flared since blasts shook Afghanistan recently, which Kabul attributed on Pakistan. The Taliban reject allegations that it is harboring militants aiming at Pakistan.

Social Media and Military Confrontations

The opposing forces are not only battling for the upper hand on the border, but also on social media, trying to convince the general population that their faction is causing more damage.

The most recent clashes come after severe cross-border confrontations over the past few days, when the Afghan forces claimed to have eliminated fifty-eight members of the Islamabad's armed forces and Islamabad said it killed two hundred "Taliban and linked insurgents". The claimed death tolls provided by each side could not be independently verified.

A few days of fragile peace that had persisted since the weekend were shattered on Wednesday morning.

Local Reports and Impact

Footage allegedly of the conflict and its aftermath have been circulated on the internet and on messaging groups, including footage said to be of those deceased and grainy shots from low-light cameras purporting to be of check posts destroyed. These videos have not been verified.

A informant in Spin Boldak in Afghanistan reported that clashes erupted at around 4 a.m. local time (23:30 GMT on the previous day). Another local in Spin Boldak, who lives about a short distance away from the frontier post, said that "very heavy clashes continued for almost several hours".

"I see drones and jets flying over us, some of our relatives are injured," they added.

A medical professional in one of the medical facilities in Spin Boldak reported that he counted "seven fatalities and 36 injured brought to the hospital", including men, women and children.

The circumstances were "strained" and more casualties were being transferred to hospital, he said.

Evacuations and Global Responses

A regional Taliban official in Spin Boldak announced that "hundreds of families have been forced to flee since last night due to the intense clashes". He said they were on "high alert" after a few military positions were attacked by Pakistani jets. He further indicated that they had the bodies of two armed forces members.

In a distinct overnight clash on the north-western border, the Islamabad's forces claimed that twenty-five to thirty militant and Pakistani Taliban fighters were "believed" to have been eliminated.

The clashes have led to calls for de-escalation from foreign nations including China and Moscow, as well as a suggestion from US President Donald Trump that he could intervene to broker a ceasefire.

On Wednesday, a UN official, United Nations representative on the situation of civil liberties in Afghanistan, wrote on X that he was "deeply concerned" by reports of civilian casualties and displacement because of the fighting.

"I urge everyone involved to exercise maximum restraint, safeguard non-combatants, and abide by international law," he stated.

Historical Disputes

Islamabad has for years accused the Afghan Taliban of permitting the Pakistan Taliban to operate from their territory and battle against the Islamabad government in an effort to enforce a strict Islamic-led system of rule.

The Taliban leadership has consistently rejected this.
